Tattoo Removal Aftercare Guide

Proper aftercare is the single biggest factor you control in your tattoo removal results. Follow these steps after every session to heal faster, reduce your risk of complications, and get the best possible outcome from each treatment.

What Your Skin Looks Like Straight After a Session

The photo below was taken minutes after a laser session, and it surprises people the first time they see it. The tattoo has gone a white-grey colour, the skin around it is red, and the whole area is slightly raised. That is exactly what should happen.

Immediately after treatment, not a fading result. The white-grey layer over the tattoo is “frosting”. This photo shows the normal reaction minutes after a session — it is not what the tattoo looks like once it has healed and faded.

Real client photo. Identifying details removed to protect privacy. Individual results vary; some inks fade rather than fully clear.

Here is what you are seeing, and why none of it is cause for alarm:

  • Frosting, the white-grey layer — the laser reaching the ink. It settles within about 15–30 minutes.
  • Redness and mild swelling — a normal response, most obvious on the first day.
  • A raised, puffy feel to the treated skin — helped by a cool compress or elevation.
  • Pinpoint bleeding or small blisters — leave blisters intact, they protect the healing skin.

Important: what you see immediately after a session tells you nothing about your final result. The actual fading happens over the following 6–8 weeks as your body clears the shattered ink, which is why we photograph your tattoo at each visit rather than judging it on the day. To see what fading itself looks like, view our real client before-and-after results.

The first 24 hours

The first day after treatment is when your skin is most vulnerable. The laser has shattered ink particles beneath the surface, and your body's immune response is already kicking in. Here is what to do.

  • Apply the soothing gel provided — a thin layer after your session and as needed through the day.
  • Keep the area clean and dry — lukewarm water, mild fragrance-free soap, pat dry, don't rub.
  • Avoid touching the treated area — wash your hands first if you must apply anything.
  • Use a cool compress if needed — ice wrapped in a clean cloth, 10–15 minutes, never directly on skin.
  • Elevate the area if it's on a limb — it helps reduce swelling.

Tip: Wear loose, breathable clothing over the treated area for the first few days to avoid friction and irritation.

Healing Timeline

Every person heals differently, but here is the typical progression you can expect after a laser tattoo removal session.

Day 1: Redness & Swelling
The treated area is red, slightly swollen, and may feel warm or tender — like mild sunburn. This is your body's normal inflammatory response.
Week 1: Blistering & Peeling
Blisters may form in the first few days — leave them alone, they protect the healing skin underneath. Scabbing and peeling can follow; let it happen naturally.
Week 2–4: Skin Repair
The surface skin closes and heals: redness fades, scabs fall off, new skin forms. It may feel itchy — resist scratching. Keep moisturising and applying sunscreen if the area is exposed.
Week 4–8: Ink Fading
Even after surface healing, your lymphatic system keeps processing and flushing shattered ink for up to 8 weeks. That's why your tattoo keeps fading after each session, and why sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

What's Normal vs When to Contact Us

It can be difficult to know what is a normal part of healing and what might need attention. Here is a clear breakdown.

Completely Normal

  • Redness and mild swelling
  • Blistering (even large blisters)
  • Itching during healing
  • Scabbing and peeling
  • Temporary darkening of ink
  • Mild bruising around the area

Contact Us If You Notice

  • Excessive swelling that worsens after 48 hours
  • Signs of infection (pus, spreading redness, hot to touch)
  • Severe or increasing pain after 3+ days
  • Fever or feeling unwell
  • Open wound that does not begin healing within a week

If in doubt, call us on 0440 133 330. We would always rather hear from you early than have you worry on your own. No question is too small.

Sun Protection

UV exposure is the number one enemy of healing skin after laser treatment. It can cause hyperpigmentation, slow healing, and increase the risk of scarring. Take sun protection seriously.

  • SPF 50+ on the treated area for at least 4 weeks after each session, even overcast days.
  • No tanning beds during your treatment course.
  • Cover the area with clothing for extended time outdoors.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours outdoors, or after swimming or sweating.

What to avoid for 48 hours

Your body needs time to heal. Avoiding certain activities in the days after treatment reduces the risk of infection, irritation, and delayed healing.

  • No swimming, sauna, or spa for at least 48 hours.
  • No intense exercise for 48 hours — light walking is fine.
  • Don't pick at scabs or blisters — the most important rule.
  • Avoid tight clothing or friction over the area for the first few days.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours — it can increase bruising and swelling.

Products to Use & Avoid

What you put on your skin during healing matters. Stick to simple, gentle products and avoid anything that could irritate or slow recovery.

Use

  • Soothing gel provided at your session
  • Fragrance-free moisturiser (e.g. CeraVe, QV)
  • SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • Mild, fragrance-free soap for washing

Avoid

  • Makeup or cosmetics over treated area
  • Harsh soaps, exfoliants, or scrubs
  • Retinol, AHA, BHA, or vitamin C serums
  • Fragranced lotions or perfumed products
  • Self-tanner or fake tan on the area

Aftercare FAQ

Yes, you can shower after treatment. Use lukewarm water and avoid directing high-pressure water onto the treated area. Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel. Do not rub. Avoid baths, swimming pools, and spas for at least 48 hours as submerging the area in water increases infection risk.

Wait at least 48 hours before resuming intense exercise. Sweat and friction can irritate the treated area and increase the risk of infection. Light walking is fine from day one. When you do return to exercise, keep the area clean and dry, and shower promptly afterward.

Yes, blistering is a completely normal and expected response to laser treatment. It is actually a sign that the laser has effectively targeted the ink particles beneath your skin. Blisters act as a natural sterile dressing. Do not pop or pick at them. Let them resolve on their own to avoid scarring and infection. Most blisters subside within 1–2 weeks.

You should protect the treated area from direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks after each session. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you go outdoors, and cover the area with clothing for extended sun exposure. Avoid tanning beds entirely throughout your treatment course. UV exposure on healing skin can cause hyperpigmentation and may compromise your results.

This is normal and temporary. Some inks (particularly white, flesh-toned, and certain red or pink pigments) can undergo a temporary oxidation reaction that makes them appear darker immediately after laser treatment. This typically resolves within a few weeks as your body processes the ink particles through the lymphatic system. If the darkening persists beyond 4–6 weeks, let us know at your next session.

Most surface skin heals within 4 to 6 weeks, but the deeper work continues beyond that. Your lymphatic system keeps processing and flushing shattered ink particles for up to 8 weeks after each session. That is why treatments are typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, to allow full healing and maximum ink clearance between sessions for the best possible results.
